Women in coaching

sportscotland have recognised the importance of engaging females into coaching roles in the new Coaching Scotland strategy. Workforce development planning has shown that the gender balance in basketball is 70:30 (male:female) across all provision.

basketballscotland is working to motivate and encourage more females to step onto the court and take on a coaching role; be it as a leader, assistant coach or head coach.

Find out about programmes that are supporting more females to become coaches and meet some of basketball’s female coaches, mentors and volunteers.

Female Only Coaching Courses

The first ever women only UKCC Level 1 coaching course finished at the weekend. The course which was delivered by two female tutors and observed by a female tutor in training was held in Glasgow. 10 females attended the course. They were each asked to provide some feedback. Some of the responses are detailed below:

What aspect of the course did you learn the most from?

The practical, where i was able to take from other peoples experiences and my own whilst having fun”

“I found the on-course coaching very useful. It was good to get instant feedback from the tutors alongside support from my peers”

What advise would you give to a coach about to start this course?

“The course is excellent and provides you with lots of knowledge for future coaching. If you work hard and participate fully, you will benefit greatly. It was well worth it!”

What advise would you give give to the tutors for future consideration?

“Push for female only course”

“Keep running womens only courses. It was great to work alongside other women. A good confidence booster!”

Each of these coaches will be out and about coaching in their communities on a regular basis. Following the success of this course, more all female courses will be scheduled!
