Teacher Inservice
The primary programme consists of 3 different courses to provide a clear pathway of development:
- P1 – P3: The Early Years
- P4 – P5: Introducing the FUNdamentals of Basketball
- P6 – P7: Developingthe FUNdamentals of Basketball
Course Duration: 2 Hours
Targeting class teachers and Primary PE Specialists, each course takes a games based approach to introducing and developing the fundamentals of basketball.
Accompanying a resource manual will be a set of lesson plans that will include fun warm ups, skill development, game sessions and cool downs. The main emphasis of the course will be how to deliver sessions with the main concept of learning through the playing of games, key to this will be the questions and challenges posed to the players. Each card will detail the lesson objectives, equipment needed, links to the curriculum as well as fully detailed lesson plans.
Playground Basketball
Targeting Active Schools Coordinators, playground leaders, classroom assistants and others who work with primary aged children during break times and lunchtimes, this course will allow participants to engage in fun, safe basketball which can be played in range school playground. Using weatherproof cards, the course will look at easy to set up basketball-related games and activities that the children will want to play again and again.

Secondary Teacher In-service
S1/S2 Core: Introducing Basketball Games for Secondary PE
Using games based approach this course will allow teachers to explore and develop sessions that maximise participation in games, cater for all abilities and cover the basic skills of basketball all aimed for use in a school hall.
Course Duration – 2 hours
Higher – Structures and Strategies: Full Court Offence – Fast Break
This course will explore the Fast Break Offence in basketball. Defining the aims of the fast break and looking at the success criteria the course will then explore the development of progressive practicesgoing from unopposed play to more game like practice.
Course Duration – 2 hours
Higher – Structures and Strategies: Half Court Offence (Screening Principles)
This course will focus on basic team concepts of cutting, screening and rolling. Building up from 1 v 0 practices to full half court man to man offence
Course Duration – 2 hours
Higher – Structures and Strategies: Man to Man Defence
This course will focus on individual defensive stance and movement progressing to team concept of man to man defence through game related play
Course Duration – 2 Hours
Higher – Structures and Strategies: Zone Defence
This course will describe zone principles and common zone formations including their strengths and weaknesses
Course Duration – 2 hours
Higher – Skills and Techniques
A sample of key skills executed in a game of basketball will be covered in this course. Skills covered are lay – ups, free throws, jump shots and getting free.
Course Duration – 2 hours
Higher – Preparation of the Body
This course will focus on the fitness requirements of basketball and will include fitness assessments, and examples of basketball specific training programmes
