West Youth Development Project
basketballscotland and sportscotland are working in partnership to develop and implement an exciting new Youth Leadership Programme, designed to inspire the next generation of Scottish basketball coaches, leaders and officials. The concept for this project was initiated in consultation with clubs at one of the West Club Forums hosted by the West Regional Development Officer.
The project will be piloted over one year with two clubs in the West Region. It aims to support the long term sustainability needs of these clubs, as well as contributing to national and regional priorities for coaching and volunteering as identified by basketballscotland and sportscotland.
Vision:
To have a group of well trained, confident young leaders working together to support the development of their club and basketball in their community.
Programme Aim:
To provide a targeted programme of needs based training and development opportunities to young basketball players in the West of Scotland, which contributes towards improving, informing and developing the next generation of coaches, officials, and leaders in Scottish basketball.
Key Outcomes:
- Increased number of young people volunteering in club sport
- Improved quality of young volunteers coaching and officiating in club sport
- Increased number of young coaches progressing through their qualification pathway
- Young people rewarded for their commitment to the club
- Adults trained and supported to actively support young people within clubs
- Young people have new and relevant skills to aid their coaching, officiating and leadership activities in club sport
The young leaders involved in the programme will be:
- Aged between 14 – 18 years
- Currently showing a commitment to their club in a voluntary capacity
- New to coaching/leadership/officiating or may have commenced in this pathway but have not yet had the opportunity to reach full potential
Continued participation will be on the following basis:
- Attendance at an induction briefing at the club
- Parents/guardians fully informed and supportive of their child’s involvement
- Commitment to attending ALL planned sessions
- Commitment to supporting their club and basketballscotland by putting new skills into practice
- Completion of all required paperwork and feedback questionnaires
What will the programme offer the young leader?
Practical Experience with the Support of a Club Representatives
Leaders will work alongside the Adult Connects to develop their coaching, leadership and officiating skills. The programme will give the leaders the opportunity to put their learning into practice in a safe, supportive environment within their clubs. Leaders will form their own committee to develop and lead their own development with support from the Adult Connects and club representatives.
Throughout the programme the performance of the leaders will be reviewed in each of the following settings:
- Coaching (review to be agreed with Coach Education and Development Manager)
- Officiating (review to be completed by West Officials Co-ordinator)
- General Leadership including contributions to committee meetings (to be lead by basketballscotlands Club Development Manager)
The leaders will work together with the person completing the review to formulate an action plan. The action plan will be shared with the Adult Connects.
Mentor:
Trained mentors will work alongside the leaders to support them to profile their skills before enabling them to develop individualised Personal Development Plan (PDP). The PDPs will be completed within a group environment. The Adult Connects/Club Representatives/Mentors will support the Leaders to implement their plans. The PDP will work towards both the aims of the programme and the individual development needs of the leader.
Workshops/Development Activities:
A number of development workshops will be offered to the leaders. Some of the workshops will be designed to meet the needs of basketballscotland and sportscotland priorities while others will be determined by the individual leaders. The leaders committee will take the needs of everyone into account and develop a calendar of development activities. The calendar will be approved by both the parents/guardians and basketballscotland prior to implementation. basketballscotland will support leaders to work towards the agreed calendar; where courses can’t take place due to tutor availability, alternatives will be suggested.
In addition to the club placements, set activities will be offered.
Deployment and sustainability are key to the project.
