Deployment

Information regarding the deployment of coaches can be found below. In particular information is listed about:
- General Deployment Recommendations
- National League Regulations
 
General Deployment Recommendations
In line with sportscotland,  scUK Guidlines. and England Basketball basketballscotland recommend that coaches should:
  •  hold an appropriate coaching qualification (head coaches should be working towards UKCC Level 2 certification and hold the Level 1 as the minimum)
  • be at least 18 years of age (younger coaches can take on assistant and support roles)
  • be disclosure checked/have PVG Scheme membership
  • have signed up to basketballscotlands code of conduct
  • have relevant insurance (insurance can be obtained by registering as a coach with basketballscotland)
Head coaches should also hold the following certificates:
 With regards to ratios, scUK recommend the following:
  • Children Under 8 years old: one adult to 8 participants (with a minimum of 2
    adults)
  • Children Over 8 years old: one adult to 10 participants (with a minimum of 2 adults)
 basketballscotland programmes should be adhering to these guidelines.
 
National League Regulations
basketballscotlands National League regluations state that:

“5.15: Coaches must hold a basketball coaching qualification recognised by basketballscotland to coach in all competitions”

Local league teams entering the Scottish Cup and Chairman’s Cup will not be required comply with this regulation at present however we advocate it to them as a procedure of best practice and will support those Local league Clubs who wish to adopt this pathway.

The purpose of the regulation is: To bring basketballscotland in to line with deployment guidelines that have been issued by both sportscotland and sports coach UK to improve the standard of coaches in National Competitions.

Further to a period of consultation the following step phase implementation plan has been confirmed:

Season Coaching Qualification Requirements

Coaches must have the following qualifications by the start of the stated season…

2011 – 2012 None.

Regulation introduced to the National League

Regulation relaxed to allow people time to qualify

2012 – 2013 Coaches required to have a qualification to coach in the National Competitions (Getting Started, Level 1 or Level 2)
2013 – 2014 Coaches required to have a minimum of a Level 1 (basketballscotland, England Basketball , Basketball Wales or UKCC) qualification
2014 – 2015 Appropriate level of qualification is required (minimum levels stated):

Assistant Coach: Level 1 (basketballscotland, England Basketball, Basketball Wales or UKCC)

Head Coach: Level 2 (basketballscotland, England Basketball, Basketball Wales, Advanced Coaches certificate or UKCC)

2015 – 2016 Coaches require to have appropriate UKCC level of qualification:

Assistant Coach: UKCC Level 1

Head Coach: UKCC Level 2

International qualifications will be considered on a case by case.
