Performance Coach Development Programme
Within the 2011/12 season, each National Squad Coach operating within the Senior, U23, U18 and U16 programme will be offered the following opportunities:
Areas of Emphasis Workshop
British Basketball’s Head of Performance, Warwick Cann delivered a free workshop to National Squad Coaches on the ‘Areas of Emphasis Guidelines for Coaches’ in Livingston at the end of August. Warwick offered continued support to those who attended.
High Performance Coaching Forums
Quarterly High Performance coaching forums will be held throughout the year. The forums have been structured to create a community of professional and volunteer staff that work together to:
- Improve the on court performance of all of the national teams
- Have more Scottish players representing Great Britain
The first meeting was held on Jan 23rd 2012 in Forthbank Stadium. The forum focused of the following:
- Identify what basketball knowledge and skills players need to have at each stage of the pathway
- Identify suitable speakers to provide input at future forums
- Identify what information needs to be communicated when players move on to the next squad
The next forum is scheduled for the start of May
Coaching Talent Programme ‘West’
The Coaching Talent programme ensures that excelling club and performance coaches in the West of Scotland are supported and recognised through an innovative programme of needs identified learning and development opportunities. These opportunities will improve knowledge and skills set, reward coaching commitment, and inspire coaches to perform at a higher standard in their coaching environment.
Outcomes:
- Better quality coaches working at performance level in the West of Scotland
- West of Scotland athletes working with better skilled and more knowledgeable coaches
- Increased quality of coaches working with sub institute level athletes thereby increasing the quality of entry level institute coaches
- Contribution towards coach progression through coaching pathway, thus contributing to retention
- Increased networking opportunities with peer coaches
- Improved links with HE/FE partners and increased delivery opportunities for tutors
Coaching Talent Programme ‘East’
The Coaching Talent programme ensures that excelling club and performance coaches in the East of Scotland are supported and recognised through an innovative programme of needs identified learning and development opportunities. These opportunities will improve knowledge and skills set, reward coaching commitment, and inspire coaches to perform at a higher standard in their coaching environment.
Outcomes:
- Better quality coaches working at performance level in the East of Scotland
- East of Scotland athletes working with better skilled and more knowledgeable coaches
- Increased quality of coaches working with sub institute level athletes thereby increasing the quality of entry level institute coaches

Tayside and Fife CPD Programme
National and Regional Sqaud coaches from Tayside and Fife will be able to access the The Tayside & Fife Sporting Partnership CPD programme. Coaches have been identified by the Coach Education and Development Manager and the Regional Development Co-ordinator.
The aim of the programme is to:
- Promote the use of effective and sound coaching practices
- Facilitate the exchange of relevant coaching ideas and information, identified by coaches and delivered by partners, particularly utilising the expertise across Further and Higher Education
- Improve the quality of Tayside & Fife athletes through increased local coaching skills, knowledge an experience

- Performance Planning: Rhona Martin Scottish Instiute of Sport Curling
- Influencing Short and Long term Goals: Kevin McHugh Canoeing
- Physiology: Audrey Duncan/Helen Weavers ISE Dundee
Improving Coaching Excellence ‘Grampian’
This programme offers a great opportunity for performance development coaches to enhance their skills, broaden their knowledge, challenge current practice, learn new techniques and share ideas through a series of workshops. Together with a passionate group of individuals from a variety of sports there will be a number of exciting discussions, debates and conversations in the year ahead.
All tutors and speakers come from a qualified and experienced background in their field. Workshops will include:

Coaching Endurance from developmental to elite level athletes: Brian Scobie
Exercise in childhood: Peter Helms
Endurance, sport and power training: Henning Wackerhage
Understanding Talent – Mindset: Tony Stanger
Later workshops will include: video analysis, avoiding injury and sport psychology amongst others.
Coaching Matters
High Performance Coaches will be provided with the opportunity to attend FREE coach development seminars which are run as part of the Coaching Matters programme. Further information about this programme is detailed below.
UKCC Level 3 Coaching Certificate
Once the UKCC Level 3 programme is endorsed, National Squad Head Coaches will be offered prioritised places.
Coach Apprenticeship programme
basketballscotlands coach apprenticeship programme invests in the development of a group of coaches who have been identified as having potential and have shown commitment to become future National Squad Coaches.
The programme will strengthen the technical and tactical knowledge of the targeted individuals whilst ensuring that they are growing as both a person and a coach.
The programme will be built on strong foundations of respect, trust and open communication to encourage independence while promoting self confidence.
What will the programme offer the coach?
A set of workshops and on court ‘apprentice coaching’ will be accompanied by mentoring.
Workshops/Development Activities:
A number of coach development workshops will be offered to the coaches. Some of the workshops will be designed to meet the needs of basketballscotlands programmes will others will be determined by the individual needs of the coaches (as set by their personal development plans).
Compulsory set activities will include:
- Set of technical and tactical workshops
- Set of ‘how 2’ coach workshop e.g. Building rapport and trust
- UKCC Level 2 Certification
Apprenticeship
Coaches will work alongside a technical lead to develop their technical and tactical knowledge. The lead coach will create a safe environment that supports risk taking and innovation. The apprenticeship will give the coaches the opportunity to put their learning into practice in a safe, supportive environment. Coaches will be encouraged to turn to their ‘lead coach’ for all technical and tactical support in the first instance.
The coaches may complete their ‘apprenticeship with the Future Starz programme. Equally they may be appointed into coaching positions within one of the National Squads.
Mentoring:
A trained mentor will work alongside the coaches to support them to profile their skills before supporting them to develop and implement an individualised Personal Development Plan (PDP).
The PDP will work towards both the aims of the programme and the individual development needs of the coach. The mentor will ensure that the individuals in the programme develop as both people and coaches. Coaches will be able to turn to their mentors for anything arising outwith direct technical and tactical advise.
The mentors will work to facilitate the learning process for the coaches as they develop the self awareness, independence and self confidence to take responsibility for their own learning.
Mentors may be appointed from outwith basketball.
Future Starz Coaching Clinics
Paul Boath, will be leading a coaching clinic at the upcoming Future Starz Camp. The details are as follows:

Paul will lead an interactive on court session focusing on footwork, pressure/playing at speed and decision making for younger players

Paul Boath is the National U14 Boys Head Coach. pau has won the following coaching awards:
- Tayside and Fife Performance Development Coach of the Region 10/11 (basketballscotland award),
- basketballscotlands National Contribution to Coaching Award 2011,
- Tayside Coach fo the Year 2011 (Sport Dundee)
In addition to his coaching commitments with basketballscotland and Tayside Musketeers, Paul also makes a huge contribution to basketballscotlands mentoring programme; he is currently working with 2 of the Apprenticeship Coaches and one of the coaches within the women into coaching programme.

Coaching Matters
sportscotland in partnership with Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence – the University of Stirling – have launched a programme which supports the development of performance coaches in Scotland.
The programme consists of a number of FREE workshops held throughout the year for performance coaches to attend to help them develop their effectiveness and keep up to date with coaching issues. In its first year, Coaching Matters delivered 16 workshops for 120 coaches and the learnings from each workshop are being seen throughout the coaching network.
Coaching Matters workshops are designed to discuss coaching issues and give coaches practical advice and a chance to share best practice with facilitators and other attendees.
Workshops tend to last for four hours and are a combination of networking and listening to the experiences and learnings from an expert in coaching and sport.
