Coach Apprenticeship programme
basketballscotlands coach apprenticeship programme invests in the development of a group of coaches who have been identified as having potential and have shown commitment to become future National Squad Coaches.
The programme will strengthen the technical and tactical knowledge of the targeted individuals whilst ensuring that they are growing as both a person and a coach.
The programme will be built on strong foundations of respect, trust and open communication to encourage independence while promoting self confidence.
What will the programme offer the coach?
A set of workshops and on court ‘apprentice coaching’ will be accompanied by mentoring.
Workshops/Development Activities:
A number of coach development workshops will be offered to the coaches. Some of the workshops will be designed to meet the needs of basketballscotlands programmes will others will be determined by the individual needs of the coaches (as set by their personal development plans).
Compulsory set activities will include:
- Set of technical and tactical workshops
- Set of ‘how 2’ coach workshop e.g. Building rapport and trust
- UKCC Level 2 Certification
Apprenticeship
Coaches will work alongside a technical lead to develop their technical and tactical knowledge. The lead coach will create a safe environment that supports risk taking and innovation. The apprenticeship will give the coaches the opportunity to put their learning into practice in a safe, supportive environment. Coaches will be encouraged to turn to their ‘lead coach’ for all technical and tactical support in the first instance.
The coaches may complete their ‘apprenticeship with the Future Starz programme. Equally they may be appointed into coaching positions within one of the National Squads.
Mentoring:
A trained mentor will work alongside the coaches to support them to profile their skills before supporting them to develop and implement an individualised Personal Development Plan (PDP).
The PDP will work towards both the aims of the programme and the individual development needs of the coach. The mentor will ensure that the individuals in the programme develop as both people and coaches. Coaches will be able to turn to their mentors for anything arising outwith direct technical and tactical advise.
The mentors will work to facilitate the learning process for the coaches as they develop the self awareness, independence and self confidence to take responsibility for their own learning.
Mentors may be appointed from outwith basketball.

Coaching Matters
sportscotland in partnership with Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence – the University of Stirling – have launched a programme which supports the development of performance coaches in Scotland.
The programme consists of a number of FREE workshops held throughout the year for performance coaches to attend to help them develop their effectiveness and keep up to date with coaching issues. In its first year, Coaching Matters delivered 16 workshops for 120 coaches and the learnings from each workshop are being seen throughout the coaching network.
Coaching Matters workshops are designed to discuss coaching issues and give coaches practical advice and a chance to share best practice with facilitators and other attendees.
Workshops tend to last for four hours and are a combination of networking and listening to the experiences and learnings from an expert in coaching and sport.
Upcoming workshops include:
Coaching –Style or Craft?
at Ravenscraig Sports Centre, North Lanarkshire on Monday 19th September, 10am-2pm
This workshop provides insight into a variety of coaching styles and approaches and
will include consideration of the benefits of developing a range of styles/approaches. Further discussion will reflect on the relationship between your ‘craft skills’ and the performance of your athletes.
Coaching Expertise (2)
at Stirling Management Centre on Friday 28th October, 10-2pm
This workshop targets the development of your decision-making and intervention
skills and builds on the material covered last year. At the workshop you will
consider some case study ‘coaching problems’ and discuss how best to overcome
them.
Competition Management (1)
at the Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh, on Tuesday 6th December, 10-2pm
This workshop is based on examining your (the coaches’) behaviour up to and including the day of competition. Consideration will be given to ‘effective coaching
behaviours’ and how best to develop and utilise these. This workshop was also
delivered last year.
