Stephen Duff receives Coach of the Year honours

West Lothian Council held its annual Celebrating Sport Awards on Friday 26th February 2010 to celebrate some of the major sporting achievements made by local athletes, coaches and volunteers during 2009. Basketball Scotland congratulates, Coach Stephen Duff (Lothian Phoenix Wheelchair Basketball Club) on winning the West Lothian Council Coach of the year Award.

Stephen Duff is the coach to the Lothian Phoenix Wheelchair Basketball Club. In 2006 he formed the club to provide more opportunities for people with a physical disability the opportunity to play competitive basketball. Stephen coached the club to three divisional promotions in three years and the club has now grown so much that a second team has been entered into the Great Britain Development league. Stephen was the Assistant Coach for the GB Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Squad from 2005 to 2008 and was the Assistant Coach the GB Junior Men from 2008 to 2009. Stephen not only coaches to a high level he also provides Wheelchair Basketball sessions and Disability awareness sessions in local schools in West Lothian

The Coach of the Year Award for West Lothian Council is awarded each year to a coach who has made an outstanding contribution locally to the development of coaching in their sport. Nominations were invited from the public to identify amateur and professional sports persons or volunteers who have excelled in their chosen field during 2009. The nominations were then considered by a panel consisting of sportscotland, the local sports council, past winners, the local Sport & Outdoor Education Manager and local Councillor Jim Walker who short-listed three finalists with the eventual winner being announced on the night.

“Stephen Duff is an excellent role model for coaches in West Lothian. He has coached at GB level and is using that experience and talent to mentor the younger coaches in the Lothian Phoenix as well as providing coaching sessions for primary and secondary school children in West Lothian. He is a deserving winner and a fantastic champion to have within the sport of basketball”
- Shirley-Anne Smith, Coaching Development Officer, West Lothian Council
