Following The Olympics: GB Men 75 V 106 Australia
GB Men and Australia faced off in a crushing match. The game took place on Saturday and GB was defeated by Australia 75 – 106.
GB started the match out in front scoring the first 6 points of the game. Australia soon came back and led 14 – 11. By the end of the first quarter, GB quickly recovered and turned the game over leading 25 – 18.
Australia fought harder in the second quarter decreasing the deficit to 27 – 25. Luol Deng immediately responded with a three pointer. The half ended with Great Britain out in front with an advantage of 46 – 36.
After increasing their score to 51, GB was shocked when Australia continued with a 24 – 4 run. GB was given hope when Clark scored a three pointer making the score 66 – 60 in favour of Australia.
Australia dominated in the fourth quarter. GB failed to score for almost 5 minutes. At this point, Australia had created an over 30 point lead and Great Britain wasn’t able to catch up.
After this defeat, coach Finch said Great Britain will look to end their Olympic campaign on a high note, adding: “We’ve played well enough to deserve a victory but we have to go out and get it now.”
Freeland was Great Britain’s top scorer with 16 points and 7 assists. Clark also helped GB by shooting 14 points. Robert Archibald scored 2 points and had 4 assists.
In Group B Preliminary Round, Russia narrowly beat Spain 77 – 74. China and Brazil also played. China was defeated by Brazil 98 – 59. For their next game, GB’s men’s team competes against China Monday at 4:45pm.
