Following The Olympics: GB Men 78 v 79 Spain

GB Men gave an impressive performance in yesterday’s match against Spain.  Great Britain fought hard against the second best ranked team in the world but was defeated 78 – 79 in the last few minutes of the game.

Spain started the game quick and built a 6 – 0 lead but GB kept up with Freeland scoring the team’s first 8 points.  Deng scored a three pointer which decreased Spain’s lead to 14 – 11.  Right after, Spain shot 8 points to end the first quarter 24 – 15.

Great Britain started strong in the second quarter but Spain came back and led 37 -29 by halftime.

Spain continued pushing the lead and at the end of the third quarter, they were up 60 – 48.

In the fourth quarter, Deng scored 8 of the next 10 points for GB making the score 68 – 65.  After Spain increased their lead to 6, Freeland scored and set the game at 71 – 69.  In the end, GB picked up momentum but it wasn’t enough to defeat Spain.

Joel Freeland said, “We played great, held our nerve and hit some clutch shots. We were always in it, it was a great game, we have just got to keep doing what we are doing. We are fighting.”

Great Britain’s Luol Deng led the game scoring 26 points.  Joel Freeland also played well shooting 25 points. Robert Archibald scored 2 points and 1 assist.

In Preliminary Round Group B, Australia beat China 81 – 61.  Brazil and Russia also played with Russia narrowly winning 75 – 74.  Great Britain’s next match is against Australia this Saturday at 8:00pm.
