U16 Men – Scotland the Brave !

The ScotlandCadet Men travelled to NorthumbriaUniversity on Thursday the 7th June to tackle the England U-15 Men in a friendly match. This was the first outing for the squad that will represent Scotland at the European Championships, Division C in Gibraltar this summer, and also an opportunity for the coaching staff to see how the team’s style of play was developing.

Scotland got of to a flying start, hitting a high number of their shots enabling them to establish a first quarter lead of 22-8. The England boys were creating scoring opportunities but found it difficult to convert under a high tempo defence from the Scots. Scotland again played a stifling defence in the second period and also ran their bench into the game, but still did enough to extend their lead at half time to 20 points at 35-15.

Scotland knew that England had more in their locker than they had displayed in the first half, and so it was to prove in the third quarter. England adjusted there own defence at half time and pressed high up the court. This caused several issues for Scotland whom had entered the half time break with only 3 turnovers. This soon changed under the pressure defence and enabled England to run in a series of consecutive baskets. England won the third quarter 19-4 to set up a tense final period.  The lead changed 4 times throughout the final quarter, with England being up by as many as 5 points at one stage, but Scotland forward, Malcolm Winning hit back to back 3 point shots at a crucial stage in the game, enabling Scotland to regain the lead. Scotland Power Forward Cameron McKay then had a crucial rebound tip in which put Scotland up by 4 with 10 seconds to play, and this proved to be the decisive basket as Scotland held on to win 61 – 57, and showed great bravery in doing so having been put through extreme pressure in the second half of the game.

Top performers forScotland:

Cameron Mckay – 24 points & 12 rebounds

Malcolm Winning –  13 points & 4 rebounds

Mitchell Rae – 8  points

Gregor Gray – 8 rebounds
