Glasgow Schools Cup Finals
Last Thursday the 17th annual Glasgow Schools Finals ( modern era ) were held at the Donald Dewar Centre, Drumchapel. Top honours went to Knightswood Secondary with two finalists and two victories.
In the U14 Boys game Knightswood led by Player of the Match, Alistair Mathieson, defeated Hillhead High 46-34. This was the curtain opener for the day and four hours later in the finale Knightswood Senior Boys got the second win for the school, 61-47, in a closely contested game with St Aloysuis College. Player of the Match for this game was Knightswood’s Scott Steele.
In between these games were the U15 Girls final and the U16 Boys final. In the first of these Calderglen High had a resounding win, defeating Hillhead High by 49 points to 12. Sarah Clelland’s top scoring 15 individual points earned her Player of the Match but equally impressive was the fact that Calderglen had a full complement of twelve players. Not that common for girls basketball in Glasgow and District girls school competition.
The U16 Boys game turned out to be, perhaps, the most exciting of the day. St Thomas Aquinas managed a narrow one point win over a very good team from Lourdes Secondary. After a one point semi-final victory earlier in the week the St Thomas boys showed they know how to hold their nerve in close finishes and emerged with a 53-52 win. Israel Mobali was the recipient of Player of the Match trophy for this game.
Excellent competition and much anticipation for the League Finals in four weeks time.
