The basketballscotland Officials Commission declared itself very satisfied with the standard of officiating at the 2012 Scottish Cup Finals that took place in CSE Pleasance, Edinburgh over the weekend of 4th / 5th February 2012.

Some of basketballscotland’s top referees, table officials and statisticians were involved in the profile event, with six tough cup finals played over the weekend at U-16, U-18 and Senior level for both Men and Women.

Eddie McKinley, Chair of the OC, was happy that the basketballscotland officials development programmes are reaping results. Eddie said “It was very encouraging to see some of our younger referees and table officials active at the 2012 Scottish Cup Finals. They have done a good job, and the hard work put in by our tutors and referee assessors is paying off.”

Damian Sharp, one of basketballscotland’s Table Officials tutors, was happy with some of the younger TOs performances. “The table officials did a great job, and for many of them it was there first experience of ‘tabling’ at a big event with show court and a full house. There are a couple of areas for improvement, but overall it was a great job by our table officials.”

Our statisticians also worked very hard over Saturday and Sunday, providing FIBA Level statistics at the end of each period. Many coaches commented on “the stats guys” doing such a good job, with some coaches now looking for stats on every National League game.

The 12 referees selected to referee the six cup finals also had very good performances. It was a mixture of youth and experience, and Chris Dodds, basketballscotland’s National Referee Instructor was keen to stress that the committment to learning from young referees was now paying off. “Our basketball referees are regulary attending seminars, completing fitness tests and passing rules tests to show that they are committed to improving the standard of refereeing in Scotland. Not everyone can referee a cup final, but the referees who were selected did an excellent job on each game.  The hard work of our referees, assessors and instructors is definitely making a visible improvement and our young referees have a bright future.”
