East takes West in wheelchair cup final
Wheelchair Final
Phoenix began strong scoring the first basket and pressured the West on defence. After going to the line Phoenix remained ahead with 5 minutes left in the 1st with the score at 6-4. West showed good passing but failed to convert their shot opportunities. After Ryan Alexander went to the line and scored a point to pull the West ahead going into the 2nd at 8-9.
Both teams started the 2nd period well with the score 12-11 with 6 minutes left. Good rebounding and ball handling quickly put Phoenix ahead 16-13 with 4 minutes remaining. After some successful freethrow shooting Phoenix were ahead 19-16 at the end of the half. They then went on a 6 point streak increasing their lead half way through the 3rd at 25-18. Accurate passing from Lothian saw them up 35-24 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Phoenix continued to play aggressively in the 4th and increased their lead to 17 with 5 minutes left of the game. West continued to struggle and were down 55-29 with 1 and a half minutes to go however they hussled up to the last second and managed to claw 2 points to finish off the game 55-31 to Lothian Phoenix.
The West’s coach Peter Moore felt that his young inexperienced squad felt outmatched by the older Phoenix. He was happy with how his team played against their more experienced opponents.
Phoenix’s Stevie Duff said was pleased with his win and said “our superior fitness and the fact that the boys started finishing shots in the 3rd was what helped us pull away and win the game”.
